An idea has been rumbling around in my brain for a while now.

How can I help coaches, consultants and others in leadership roles in quick bursts? How can I do this in a way that truly serves their needs and make it free? The answer came and with some extra advice from a friend and colleague, Kevin Kermes, I realized the way to do this.

Over the next few weeks I will be gathering questions from you about what would actually help you in your daily adventures as leaders, business professionals coaches and consultants. Each week I will post a new video or audio file addressing these questions. So for starters I will launch with the Consultants Corner and follow short after with the Coach’s corner and following with the Leader’s Corner.

Marketing Yourself for a Job – a recent graduate’s perspective

For recent graduates looking to hop into their industries, it’s not going to be an easy road. As one, I know. I have to market myself in order to find a marketing career. I have to stop thinking of myself as one in a hundred job applicants, and start thinking of myself as a marketer with a valuable product to sell: me.

If I can correctly identify a company’s needs, I can be the right person to satisfy those needs and earn my salary. The job of a marketer is to satisfy customers or in this case prospective employers. To tackle that, I must do some planning and preparation. Great outcomes happen after well-conceived planning.

A mistake in the planning is to start with sending a resume. A more powerful approach would be an investigative one. Learn more about who’s going to be looking at the resume. Think of the industry or company where you will be sending your resume and then study and analyze the market, examine any competitive activities, study the consumer of the product to gain insight into usage habits and attitudes about the product, the company, and their category.

Then and only then do I start thinking about my resume. I believe that if these critical steps are ignored, one will be doomed to fail. All that useful knowledge can only help in the job hunt and interview. Once I’ve secured the interview, I’ll be halfway home. Now I get to show my prospective value, live and in person, rather than telling the person through the printed word. This is the place where I can put everything on the line: combined years of life experience, hundreds of hours of diligent preparation, and a burning passion to pursue my craft. So what should I do next? It’s simple – follow up. The great thing about the follow-up is that it gives me another chance to prove my value. I should always view the immediate follow-up as another opportunity to market myself. If I do everything, I’ll become quite a well-rounded marketing manager. I’ll uncover my strategic, creative, and analytic abilities; I’ll discover how to be persuasive on paper, in person, and over the phone; and I’ll learn the importance of planning, persistence, and patience — a pretty tall order, especially for someone just stepping out of college.

Values – and Decisions – Free Survey Tool

Now offering a survey tool ( online) that can help a student decipher the importance of decisions based on prioritizing values. I am certified to administer many different professional assessments/surveys. Two are from the same company. Golden LLC. One of them has been very helpful for my clients; VAL. It helps a person prioritize values in ways that help clarify why and how decisions are made. Now the gentleman who developed that has opened up a version for youths ages 13 – 20 and he is allowing me to offer it FREE.

New Values Arrangement List for Teens (VAL-Teens) assessment is being trial tested. The VAL-Teens is based on the same model of human values used in the VAL survey for adults. The resulting one page report is also designed with the teenage student in mind. The purpose of the VAL-Teens survey and the report is to help students develop a language system and improved self-awareness needed to help make better decision and life choices. Results are confidential.
